Facebook is expected to launch an instant messaging service. The social networking site is  believed to have been trialing the IM service, which will allow users to chat to other members without the need for a third-party application.

According to TechCrunch the messenger service will use the Jabber open-source platform so users can add the service to other instant messaging clients, although details are currently very sketchy.

The announcement follows AOL highlighting its plans to combine its AIM service with the newly acquired social networking site, Bebo.
